Dive into Fresh Lake Waters
The pristine inland beaches of Rangeley Lakes offer an oasis for those seeking an escape from the summer heat. Immersing yourself in the clear lake waters on a sweltering summer day is an experience like no other. Public access to these inland waters is often free or for a minimal fee. Just remember to pack your swimsuit!
The depth of the region's lakes guarantees cool temperatures even during the hottest months. You can take a refreshing dip at the Town Park, which features bathhouses, a playground, pavilions with picnic tables, and grills for a delightful lakeside meal.
At Rangeley Lake State Park on South Shore Drive, you can enjoy the pristine lake and a short hike on two scenic trails for a minimal fee.
A 14-mile journey north of Oquossoc on Route 16 is well worth taking. Your destination is Upper Richardson Lake, a natural oasis nestled amongst the mountains. The area is especially inviting if you have a boat to help explore its beauty. Mill Brook Road, a mile-long, well-maintained dirt road, provides access to Upper Richardson Lake. You'll find an outhouse and parking across the road from the boat launch.
Late summer, when the temperatures peak, is the best time to hit the beach. From the boat launch dock, head left toward the mouth of Mill Brook Stream, which connects Pepperpot Pond to Upper Richardson. Here, a gentle current tempts swimmers to paddle upstream before a leisurely float back down into calm waters. The mildly red-tinted sand is adorned with stones and boulders. Wading along the stream's edge, explore shallow sandy areas for cooling off and deeper spots for swimming. Don't forget your binoculars to catch sight of the loons that grace these serene waters.
